Before taking this course, I had never really thought about rainwater as something I could actively manage at home. I simply saw rain as water that falls, runs off the roof, and eventually disappears into the drains. Now I understand that it can actually be collected, stored, or guided back into the soil in a much smarter way. What surprised me most was how different passive and active harvesting can be. I particularly liked the idea of using the landscape itself, with rain gardens and swales, to slow down water and let it naturally return to the soil. At the same time, I can see why having a rain barrel is useful when you need water during a dry period. I was also surprised by how many small details can affect the safety and effectiveness of the system. I had never heard of the first-flush effect, and I found it interesting that the first few millimeters of rain can contain most of the dirt and contamination from the roof. I also didn't realize that something as simple as an improperly sealed barrel could create a mosquito problem. Overall, this course made me look at rain differently. I now see it not as something to simply drain away, but as a resource that can be captured and used responsibly with the right system and a little maintenance.
